Hands up for silk in Queensland

Thirty seven hopefuls from the Qld bar have applied for silk ... Including as many as five women ... Aspirations on display

THE Qld bar has listed these senior counsel applicants for 2012 in order of the date their application was received.

Chief Justice Daphnis de Jersey makes the final selection based on advice from a collection of worthies. The CJ can also create his own appointments.

Happily, the bar and the Qld AG, Mr Bjelke-Jarrod, 30, agreed in June on a plan to convert all SCs into QCs.

See: Putting the Queen back into Queensland.

According to the bar, being swathed in silk ...

"provides a public identification of barristers whose standing and achievements justify an expectation, on the part of those who may need their services as well as on the part of the judiciary and the public, that they can provide outstanding services as advocates and advisers, to the good of the administration of justice."

The unfortunate implication is that other members cannot justify this lofty expectation.

Good luck to all the contenders for 2012:
